Hi Nic Jonsson here again! I hope everyone is getting back into the swing of things after the holidays. I’ve had one of the most relaxing weeks in a long time. When I say relaxing, that means that I have spent the entire week at home without having to travel however I have still been busy.
December 22, 2008
Hey! Nic Jonsson here again. I hope everyone has survived all the food and fun from the Holidays. Monday marked the finish of our 3 day test in Daytona for the Rolex 24 hour that is coming up in 3 weeks. I’m happy to say that we at Krohn Racing had 3 very good days where we managed to run through our test plan. I’m anxious to head back to Daytona for the race to get the 09’ season kicked off. As I mentioned before, we changed to the Ford power plant for the 09’ season. This has given us the ability to focus more on pure chassis set up and therefore we’ve been able to find more speed in the car.
The 24 hours of Daytona is a very difficult race on both equipment and personal. For the mechanics, this race actually turns out to be a 35 hour race since they have to be there early race morning to get all the final touches done on the car and equipment. The race this year does not start until 3:30pm but the preparation for the crew starts at 8am so if you take that plus the few hours it takes to load everything after the race, you’re looking around 35 hours. That’s tough, to stay awake, focus and perform at top levels during pit stops, etc. Kudos to the crews! We also brought 2 of our Kinetic Motorsports BMW GS cars down for the test. I got in the cars the first day to do a shake down and fine tune the set up before our regular drivers took over for the reminder of the test. Both Russell Smith (my Kinetic partner) and his co- driver, Lee Davis did a fantastic job. Both ran faster than they have ever done at Daytona and were very competitive in every session. Our other clients’ car of Todd and Glenn Bocchino was also in the top 5-7 every session. Considering this is a pure power track that will suit the “American Muscle cars”…the Ford Mustangs better than any other track, we felt very happy with our test results. So, now it’s all about final preparations back home in our shop. I can’t wait to get going, I’m ready!
On a personal note, my son Max is getting more fun by the day. I know it’s easy to say when you’re not the one at home every day but even my wife who does all the hard work just loves it. This is going to be one really fun year now that Max is more mobile. Well, I know I should be careful of what I ask for but hey, they need to be kids and have their fun too. My mom and dad just left a couple of days ago after coming over to celebrate New Years with us. It’s so much fun to see my parents play with Max. I believe it’s very important for kids to know family. I know we always complain about grand parents spoiling their grand children but that’s the way it should be. For my wife and me, being from Sweden and living so far away from our relatives makes it hard sometimes. So we really enjoy having our parents visit and watch them spend quality time enjoying their grand kids.
Well I think it’s time for me to go. Have a great week and I’ll talk with you next week.
Your friend, Nic

December 15, 2008
Hi Nic here again! Well, I’m getting ready to turn my focus to the Rolex 24. I’m very excited and looking forward to this race. I believe this race is the most diversified and competitive endurance race in the world along with the classic 24 Hours Le Mans. One contributing factor to this is the latest addition to the already impressive driver line up, NASCAR driver, Jimmie Johnson. Jimmie entered with one of the front running teams for the second year in a row. All American drivers are aware of NASCARs popularity, the media swarm and fan base these NASCAR drivers bring. For some foreign drivers who don’t know who Jimmie Johnson is, I can just tell you this is a great benefit to the Rolex series. I have not had a lot of experience with stock car but have been fortunate enough to do testing for a sprint cup team over the last five years and competed in the Nationwide race in Montreal last year. Having the 3-time Sprint Cup Champion racing with us in the Rolex 24 hour race is going to be great fun. Not only is Jimmie a great champion but he’s a great guy and sports figure. I’m looking forward to rubbing wheels with you out there Jimmie!
In the meantime, we’re just a few days from Christmas and hopefully you’ve got all our shopping done…not me! I still need to get out there and rub shoulders with all the fierce people looking for that perfect gift with their special “coupon purse” filled with coupons. I think they have collected these coupons over the past few years…at least that’s what it looks like by the amount of coupons! The stores I enjoy the most are the toy stores. Now with my son Max, I have an excuse to spend hours in the toy store checking out (playing) with all the cool stuff. They didn’t have all these neat gadgets when I was growing up. I’m finding toys not only for my son to play with but me as well. I know that sounds very egocentric but I think we all want to stay kids forever but we just have a hard time to admit it. I obviously don’t have that problem although my wife probably does!!
Cooking is a very big part of the whole Christmas celebration and that is no different for my family. I am from Sweden so when it comes to food, we have a little bit different culture compared to the traditional American Christmas feast. We normally start out with a big breakfast with oatmeal, eggs, herring, etc. The Swedish Christmas feast starts with different herring (raw fish) with all kinds of sauces and gravy. Along with this is the famous “Snaps”, the finest Vodka with special spices. This makes it a lot of fun later in the afternoon when it’s time to open presents with Santa! Another Swedish tradition that may seem odd and is one of the biggest customs in Sweden since the 50’s is the 3pm “Donald Duck’s Christmas” on TV. Yes, you read that right, Donald Duck the Disney character. We actually plan our Christmas lunch/dinner feast and unwrap Christmas presents around this TV show…pretty bizarre but it works.
Well I think it’s time for me to let you guys go and enjoy Christmas with your families and friends. Have a wonderful Holiday.
You friend, Nic

Hi race fans, Nic Jonsson here again. The past week I went to the PRI show in Orlando to check out the latest and greatest in motorsports and machinery related in one way or another to the automobile industry. Honestly, that show has gotten so big and with so many different booths, not all related to automobiles or racing; that your head is just spinning when getting in there. The reason I went was because we at Kinetic Motorsports had our new BMW M3 V8 displayed in the Cobalt Friction booth. The car was well received with a lot of attention since it’s the first E92 V8 built for the KONI Challenge series.
December 01, 2008
Hey, Nic Jonsson here! The past weekend has been very busy here at Kinetic Motorsports. We have been finishing up the new BMW M3 V8 we are building for the 2009 KONI Challenge GS season. Now, I know I’m a little bias in this particular case, but this car is one good looking race machine and we are very proud of it! BMW enthusiast will love this car and I’m sure it will get a lot of attention especially since this will start a new era of BMW race cars based on the new M3 V8 model that was released early 2008.

Nic Jonsson here again! Well, now that we are past Thanksgiving and heading for Christmas, the 09’ season is right around the corner. I know all the teams are working hard prepping for Test days in Daytona for the beginning of January. All teams prepare in different ways and I believe in trying new ideas and really it’s all about educating ourselves…on our cars, new tires, new drivers, etc. That is what sets teams apart, testing and implementing various techniques we have learned to gain even that tiny advantage.
November 17, 2008
Hi Nic Jonsson here again this week I want to share some technical stuff about the Proto Auto LOLA chassis. There is a lot of different ways you can build a race car and every engineer has their own idea and opinions on how. The LOLA is structured with a tube frame chassis along with a honeycomb tub. Honeycomb is a material that is layers of thin aluminum strips and pressed together in a particular pattern to make the structure very strong and safe. This material is also a pretty light but yet very absorbent of impact in the case of a crash.
November 10, 2008
Well last week became pretty interesting considering I thought we were just going to travel to Daytona for the last 2 days of testing for 2008. The whole point of this test was to try out the new tires that Pirelli said were exactly the same as the 08’ season tires…the only difference being that they were now made in Turkey by a machine instead being handmade by “Giuseppe” in Italy. I don’t know exactly what the difference in these new tires is, but one thing is for sure, they are very different from last year’s tire. Our team, Krohn Racing, had to change the car around quite a bit in order to adapt to these new tires but I truly feel that we have found a path that’s heading in the right direction.

Krohn Racing returns to the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series for the Rolex 24 At Daytona in 2009 for its fourth time as an independent race team of owner/driver Tracy W. Krohn. The driver line-up for the 47th Annual Rolex 24 At Daytona, will include Tracy Krohn paired again with endurance sports car veteran Eric van de Poele in the No. 75 entry, along with Brit Oliver Gavin. The No. 76 car will re-join team regular Nic Jönsson with former Formula One star Ricardo Zonta and English sports car ace Darren Turner. The six drivers were paired identically in last year's Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Nic Jonsson here again! Well, I think I have to start by explaining and defending myself. What the heck am I talking about you ask? I’m talking about my “pimp” picture in last week’s blog from my Halloween celebrations. I’m sure we all like practical jokes…as long as we’re not on the receiving end. Well, this time I was on the receiving end. I was out trick or treating with my 15 month old son Max while my wife was following us around taking pictures. I thought it would be fun and to have some memories but what I did not know was that my “lovely” wife, along with my PR person, would be using them for my blog.
October 27, 2008
Hi Nic here again! Well we at Krohn Racing just kicked of the 09’ season this past week. I traveled to Daytona for a 3 day test last Monday through Wednesday. We had a successful test with a lot of valuable data collected in order to get ready for the first race of the season, the Rolex 24 hour race. We managed to log over 1,700 miles in 3 days as our main focus was to add miles on the car since we had not raced our Proto Auto Lola in a 24 hour race before.
October 20, 2008
Hey Nic again, the season has finally come to an end and we’re all starting to look forward to a new season, but before that, we have a lot to do to make sure we keep our families happy along the way. Yes, I’m talking about Halloween, Thanksgiving and of course Christmas. In my case, my son Max is soon to be 15 months old and I’m sure he’s going to want dad to get dressed up and go trick or treating with him. I thought about getting dressed as a Swedish “Viking” but that would probably scare the whole neighborhood!

Risi Competizione's two Ferrari 430 GTs finished in 2nd and 12th places in today's American Le Mans Series season finale - a four hour race interrupted by no fewer than 12 safety car periods. Despite challenging for the lead, a third GT2 victory in four races wasn't to be for the 2008 Le Mans 24 Hour champions. Mika Salo and Jaime Melo brought the #62 car home in a strong second place despite suffering from front suspension failure which severely compromised the handling of the car in the final hour. It was a disappointing result considering that the Risi Ferrari had been able to take the GT2 class lead (after starting from 5th place on the grid) through great track performance and good pit strategy. Tracy Krohn and Nic Jönsson overcame rude and unwelcome contact from a prototype on lap 10 of the race which caused a left rear puncture and some bodywork damage. Further contact from another prototype left the Texan owner of Krohn Racing in the gravel trap on lap 98 but he fought back with a string of consistently quick laps to make up lost ground and overtook the Ford GT two laps before the end to place in 12th.
October 14, 2008
The Risi Competizione team travels to the final round of the 2008 American Le Mans Series riding on the crest of a wave, having triumphed in the GT2 class at two of the last three races including the prestigious Petit Le Mans. The victory at Road Atlanta on October 4, together with the Houston-based team's dominant win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June, has gone a long way towards making up for the dismal early part of its 2008 racing season. Laguna Seca has always been a happy hunting ground for Risi Competizione and all four drivers love racing at the track. It is at this track that Risi has twice brought home the ALMS Teams Championship and where, in 2007, Salo and Melo clinched the GT2 Drivers' Championship - an honor that has gone this year to the team's much-respected rivals, Flying Lizard Motorsports.
October 13, 2008
Hey Nic again! Well this has been another week of racing…club racing. I headed to Daytona for a PCA (Porsche Club of America) event with Kinetic Motorsports. Kinetic’s has a very solid club program that we run for our clients that bring their cars to our shop for tune-ups and performance upgrades. We transport their cars to/from the race tracks and provide track support with our same crew guy’s that support Kinetic’s GS KONI Challenge program.
October 06, 2008
Hi there, Nic Jonsson again. The season is coming to an end and we’re already talking about next year. It’s funny how drivers are, we complain about the travel and being away from home but the season has hardly ended and we are already talking about how we are looking forward to the 09’ season. In my personal case, I’m very excited about next year since we here at Kinetic Speed Shop are building new GS cars on the BMW M3 V8 model.
October 05, 2008
The red #62 Ferrari 430 GT of Jaime Melo and Mika Salo staged one of the most remarkable fight backs in the history of Petit Le Mans to take victory today in a tightly contested GT2 battle. In an excellent result for Ferrari, Nic Jönsson, Tracy Krohn and Eric van de Poele brought their #61 Krohn Racing Risi Ferrari home in 4th place. Four of the top five places in GT2 were filled by Ferraris.
September 30, 2008
Houston, TX, 30th September 2008. The Risi Competizione Ferrari GT2 team travels to Road Atlanta for next weekend's Petit Le Mans hoping to emulate its endurance success in June at the event's big brother, the world famous 24 Hours of Le Mans. The team will be re-united with its fellow Houston-headquartered racing partner, Krohn Racing, for the last two rounds of the 2008 series, reprising a racing relationship which has yielded significant success over the last two seasons. While highlights have been podium finishes at Le Mans in 2007 and Sebring in March of 2008, a strong finish at Petit Le Mans will be the prime goal in mind to add to their endurance roll of honor. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the blue ribbon Petit Le Mans race not only features an increased car count due to its prestige, but also offers a bumper crop of points to regular American Le Mans Series competitors. While Risi Competizione is not challenging for any championship titles, it is currently lying third in the GT2 Teams' standings and success in Georgia would also have a huge impact for Ferrari on the coveted Manufacturers' Championship. Amongst the line up for the #61 Ferrari F430 GT, which will be racing in the familiar Krohn green colors, is Belgian Eric van de Poele - the winner of the inaugural Petit Le Mans in 1998, in a Doyle Risi Ferrari 333SP. His experience will add to the already considerable bank of knowledge that his team mates, Tracy W Krohn and Nic Jönsson, have as their Krohn Racing Grand Am team operates from Road Atlanta premises and the track is well known to them. "I'm very happy to be back with the same team and with a Ferrari after winning the first edition of the Petit Le Mans," says Eric van de Poele, a five-time winner of the 24 Hours of Spa. "It is not the same category, of course, but to reach the end of such a hard race is always a fantastic performance for all of the team. If there is a victory at the end, you cannot believe how much joy a driver can feel on the podium. So, yes, I am looking forward and I will do the best possible to achieve a good result that Risi Competizione deserves so much. We will not be the lead car, but we will try to assist them the most and if a problem should come to them, we are going to be right there too." Tracy W Krohn, of Houston, Texas, is team owner/driver of the two-car Krohn Racing Daytona Prototype team in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series which recently finished 8th overall in the 2008 standings. "We're getting ready for Petit again this year. We had a very good result at Sebring, although not so good at Le Mans. Nic and Eric are very familiar with the track, as am I, which makes a pretty good combination. With also having our Krohn Racing team right at Road Atlanta, we've got a lot of laps around that track and the Ferrari is a wonderful car to drive. I really enjoy driving it." Swedish born Nic Jönsson, who is now based in Buford, Ga., is eager to be back behind the wheel at his home track. "It is obviously exciting to be back in the Ferrari for Petit Le Mans with Risi Competizione and Krohn Racing and driving with Tracy and Eric. It's always one of the biggest sports car races in the county, and in the world as it has a pre-qualifying status to the big race at Le Mans. We had a pretty good car last year, but had some bad luck although we were pretty quick. I think it's going to be difficult to run at speed, but we have to be smart and make sure we stay out of trouble and be consistent. We're not going to be quite as quick as the regulars are in ALMS because they drive those cars all day long, so it's going to be very difficult. We know the track real well and we'll have a very well-prepared car. I live 20 minutes from the track, as well as my business being close. I'll have a lot of people coming out to Petit - friends, family; it's going to be an exciting event." A recent Michelotto-run test session gave Jaime Melo an opportunity to experience the 2.54 mile, 12-turn Road Atlanta track in its 2008 form, and unofficial times would seem to indicate that the repaving of last spring has now had time to age and that lap times will be faster than 12 months ago for the 1000 mile race. Reigning GT2 Driver Champions and recent winners at Mosport in the #62 Rosso red Ferrari 430, Jaime Melo and Mika Salo, have elected to contest the nine hour plus race on their own rather than have a third driving partner join with them. Mika Salo explains why: "We did it just the two of us last year, after Johnny [Mowlem] hurt his wrist in warm up. It's going to be a hard race for sure and, depending on the weather, could be a very hard race, but Jaime and I know each other so well and the car so it's risky to have another driver. We trust one another 100 percent. There will be long stints and it will be tiring for both of us but we can do it of course. It's a nice track, I like it, but it will be really difficult with the prototypes as they run at such a high speed. There will also be lots of drivers in the prototypes who don't' know what they are doing - ones that aren't as experienced in the American Le Mans Series as others." "It's a lovely track," adds Jaime Melo. "And one I like as it's fast with different types of corners. I tested there with Michelotto recently and the track seems to be a lot quicker than last year - we shall have to see what happens when we actually race there. There are a lot of cars in the prototype classes, and GT2 will be competitive as always, so it will be more important than ever to stay out of trouble and be there at the finish. We have had a fast car there in the last two years but not managed to win Petit Le Mans yet. Like Le Mans in June, that is one of our main goals for the season." The 4-litre, V8-engined Ferrari 430 GT, built by Michelotto on behalf of Ferrari and race-prepared by Risi Competizione in their Houston premises, will be taking to the track for official testing for Petit Le Mans on Wednesday, October 1, with night practice on Thursday, 2nd and qualifying on Friday, 3rd. The tenth round of the American Le Mans Series will be Petit Le Mans on Saturday, October 4 at Road Atlanta, Georgia. The ten hour or 1000 mile race (whichever comes first) will start at 11:15 a.m. ET with SPEED televising the race live from 11:00am ET, coverage from 11:00am - 3:30pm and 6:30pm - 10:00pm ET. International : MotorsTV - Live on Saturday, 4th October from 4:00pm-2:30am (UK); 5:00pm-3:30am CET3:00p.m. Live radio coverage will be available from American Le Mans Radio at americanlemans.com, which also will feature IMSA's Live Timing & Scoring. Hi there, Nic Jonsson here. The Grand-Am Rolex series is over and the rest of the racing season is coming to an end. This past week I went to my native Sweden for a race and no, we were not racing on snow tires…yet! Actually the weather could not have been better.
September 22, 2008
Hi there, Nic Jonsson here. Well, the Rolex season is over and it has been a really frustrating and tough year for us at Krohn Racing. As you all know, we started out running our new chassis, the Proto Auto LOLA at Homestead this year with a lot of hopes. The car has been very good and solid as far as reliability which has given us the chance to focus on the developing the car. We’ve had great runs and two podium finishes but typically something has always gone wrong in the end.
September 20, 2008
Krohn Racing ended the 2008 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series season with a fifth and 12th place finish at Miller Motorsports Park. After starting from the pole with the No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola, the fifth place finish was bit of a disappointment to qualifying driver Ricardo Zonta and teammate Nic Jönsson. There was no pot of gold for the Krohn team, despite the rainbow over the track, when a belt that links the alternator and water pump broke on the No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola. Eric van de Poele led two laps and kept the car at the top of the chart for much of his double stint. He then turned it over to team owner/driver Tracy W. Krohn, who had to drive most of his first stint in the rain. Third driver Boris Said took over the wheel from Krohn, until the belt issue sidelined the team for a 45 minute repair. Krohn returned to the cockpit and posted a 12th place class finish.
September 19, 2008
Ricardo Zonta, co-driving with Nic Jönsson in the No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola, qualified on the pole at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah for the Grand-Am Rolex Series finale. He clocked a qualifying time of 2:35.664 and a speed of 103.747 mph for Saturday's race, the SunRichGourmet.com 1000K. The pole was a first in the Grand-Am Rolex Series for Zonta, of Curitiba, Brazil, who joined the Krohn Racing team at the start of 2008, after seven years of competition in Formula One. It was also the first pole position for the new Proto-Auto Lola, which debuted in Grand-Am in March of 2008. Zonta and Jönsson have two podium finishes this season, both third-place, at Mexico City and the Daytona Brumos 250. Their previous highest qualifying position this season was third at Barber Motorsports Park in July.
September 17, 2008
The Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series will end its 2008 season this weekend at Miller Motorsports Park in suburban Salt Lake City, Utah, with the Sunrichgourmet.com 1000 K race on Saturday, September 20th. The Grand-Am finale driver line-up is expected to feature Krohn Racing team owner/driver Tracy W. Krohn paired with veteran sports car driver Eric van de Poele in the No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola. Due to extensive hurricane damage in the Houston area and the Gulf, Boris Said has been enlisted as a standby driver for Tracy Krohn. Krohn, a Houston native, also operates a major business based in Houston. Said is a former Krohn Racing winner who paired with Jörg Bergmeister in 2006 to win the Six Hours of the Glen. He has also driven with Krohn Racing at Miller Motorsports Park, Daytona and Sonoma between 2006 and 2007. The No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola features drivers Nic Jönsson and Ricardo Zonta.
September 15, 2008
I hope all of you have had a great week so far and dodging some of these hurricanes. If you are in the “risk zone” which I know many of people who are, I hope you are remaining safe and keeping your spirits up. Know that we are thinking of you and our prayers are with you and your families.
September 08, 2008
Hey Nic here again! Wow, what a busy week and unfortunately, I can’t say it was the best week I’ve had. It started on Wednesday when I traveled to the new race track at New Jersey Motorsports Park called Thunderbolt. I arrived to the track that afternoon and decided to go for a run around the track for a few laps since I haven’t been there before. Well, in doing that, I sprained the tendon in my right foot so I had to be taped up for the rest of the week. Not really a big deal but I should have realized that this was just the beginning of a very difficult and disappointing weekend.
September 01, 2008
Hi Nic Jonsson here again! I hope all of you had a great week since I last checked in. I’ve been as busy as ever and that means lots of travel and racing. Our Kinetic Motorsports team had one of our best weekends ever! We traveled across the border to Trios-Riviere track in Canada to race in the KONI Challenge GS and ST class. Russell Smith (my business partner at Kinetics) and Lee Davis drove the ST car. They had a good, safe race and gained a lot of experience.
August 31, 2008
The challenging track conditions at New Jersey Motorsports Park had its effect on the results of the two-car Krohn Racing final results in Millville, New Jersey for the penultimate race of the 2008 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. Team owner/driver Tracy W. Krohn and Eric van de Poele grabbed eighth place on the last lap of the 105-lap race, after climbing as high as seventh and suffering an off-course spin in the No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola. The No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola entry of Nic Jönsson and Ricardo Zonta had to settle for 13th position after debris in the radiator caused the car to overheat and required an additional five pit stops to the anticipated two-stop race plan. Five cautions for 27 laps and six different cars lead the two and three-quarter hour race.
August 27, 2008
Krohn Racing joins the other Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series' teams in Millville, New Jersey this week for the penultimate race of the 2008 Grand-Am season, the inaugural Supercar Life 250 at New Jersey Motorsports Park. Round 13 of 14 will feature Krohn Racing team owner/driver Tracy W. Krohn paired with veteran sports car driver Eric van de Poele in the No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola. The No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola combines Nic Jönsson and former Formula One ace Ricardo Zonta piloting the 500-horsepower Pontiac-powered Proto-Auto Lola.
August 25, 2008
Hi Nic here again, I had a really busy and exciting week in many different ways. This past weekend we raced the short track at Watkins Glen International along with the NASCAR series. At Krohn Racing, we feel like we have made a lot of progress over the past year with the new Proto Auto LOLA Chassis however this weekend proved to be a challenge during practice and qualifying as we faced problems balancing entry and exit of the corners. For the race, our Engineer changed the car completely and as usual, he got the car the best it had been all week.
August 25, 2008
Houston, TX - August 24, 2008. The American Le Mans Series GT2 Championship-winning Risi Competizione team will extend its racing relationship with Krohn Racing for the final two rounds of the 2008 season. The two teams have joined together for endurance races both in the United States and at Le Mans over the last two years with great success. The highlights have been wins for Risi at Le Mans this year and Sebring in 2007, with the Krohn green car taking a superb second place at Le Mans 14 months ago and an equally strong podium finish at the 12 Hours of Sebring at the start of the 2008 season in March.
August 23, 2008
The Krohn Racing two-car team captured a fifth and 11th place finish in Saturday’s Armed Forces 250 race at Infineon Raceway Sears Point. It was Round 12 of 14 on the 2008 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series and a Prototype only format event of 102 laps. Nic Jönsson and Ricardo Zonta finished fifth and had to move up from 17th, after starting their No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola from the last place on the grid when their qualifying time was disallowed by officials when the car was declared too low. It was their fifth Top Five finish of the season, including two podium placements. Tracy Krohn and Eric van de Poele drove their No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola to an 11th place finish, starting from 14th on the grid. The No. 10 SunTrust Pontiac Dallara of Max Angelelli and Michael Valiante was a new Grand-Am winner this year in today’s race which only saw one caution period.
August 19, 2008
Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series teams head west this week for the Armed Forces 250 at Infineon Raceway Sears Point on Saturday, August 23, 2008, held in the beautiful wine country of Sonoma, California. Krohn Racing drivers have continued to improve their development program with the new Proto-Auto Lola. They are making progress and a victory is, undoubtedly, on the horizon. Round 12 (Prototype only cars) at Sears Point will feature Krohn Racing owner/driver Tracy Krohn and teammate Eric van de Poele in the No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola. The No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola teams Krohn regular Nic Jönsson with Ricardo Zonta. The duo has two podium finishes so far this season. Jönsson and Zonta return to the track where they first paired in August 2007, as Zonta stepped in for Colin Braun, who had a one-race suspension from Grand-Am. Since Zonta has spent much of the year learning new race tracks, the Krohn team hopes his previous appearance at Infineon will prove beneficial and good results will follow.
August 18, 2008
Hi again, Nic Jonsson here. Well as you all know, we crossed the border to Montreal and raced this past Friday. We were racing in conjunction with the NASCAR series so there wasn’t as much time for practice as usual…basically everything happened on Friday. Unfortunately, our #76 Krohn Racing Proto Auto Lola had a pretty disappointing weekend with a 12th place finish.

Krohn Racing's Ricardo Zonta and Nic Jönsson captured a Top Five finish in Friday's Crown Royal 200 at the Glen race at Watkins Glen International, round 11 of 14 of the 2008 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series schedule. Eric van de Poele clipped the wall and suffered enough damage to retire the No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola he shares with team owner/driver Tracy Krohn early. The car was retired on Lap 53 of 82 in the two-hour sprint race. Brian Frisselle and Mark Wilkins celebrated back-to-victories in their No. 61 AIM Autosport Ford Riley after collecting their first Grand-Am victory last week in Montreal.

A short turn around in the 2008 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series' schedule resulted in most teams moving directly from Montreal, Canada for Round 10 to Watkins Glen, New York for Round 11 this week without returning to their home shops. This week's race will be held on Friday, August 8th at the historic Watkins Glen International circuit in Watkins Glen, New York. The team had a driver change from Eric van de Poele to Oliver Gavin in the No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola (with owner/driver Tracy Krohn) for the Montreal Grand-Am race, where they finished in the Top 10, their best with the new Proto-Auto Lola. Eric is back with the Krohn team this week following a successful run in the 24 Hours of Spa race in his home country of Belgium last weekend. Van de Poele won his fifth 24 Hours of Spa race, an unprecedented accomplishment.

Krohn Racing looked to potentially have a Top Five and Top Ten finish in hand for their two-car team at the two-hour mark and end of the Montreal Grand-Am race. Instead they could only celebrate a Top Ten for owner/driver Tracy Krohn and Montreal race co-driver Oliver Gavin in the No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola. Brake problems on Ricardo Zonta and Nic Jönsson's No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola caused Zonta to slide into the No. 99 Gainsco Pontiac of Alex Gurney on Lap 60 of 69. A drive-thru penalty was assessed by Grand-Am for ‘avoidable contact', relegating the car to a 12th place finish after being in sixth place at the time of the incident and for most of the race.

The Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series' teams head north of the border this week for the race on Friday, August 1st at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada, Round 10 of 14 on the 2008 schedule. Krohn Racing will have a change in their driver line-up for the race, as Brit Oliver Gavin will step in to team with owner/driver Tracy Krohn in the No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola. Krohn's regular teammate, Eric van de Poele, is in his home country of Belgium seeking a fifth victory in the Spa Francorchamps 24 Hour race. The No. 76 Pontiac Lola entry will again pair Nic Jönsson with Ricardo Zonta.

Although Krohn Racing was the fastest car on the track at the Porsche 250 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series race at Barber Motorsports Park, "Lady Luck" turned her back on the team. After qualifying the car third while suffering from the flu, Ricardo Zonta, in the No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola, showed his driving talent as a former Formula One driver at the first turn of the first lap. He made a simple and classic move past polesitter Michael Valiante and Memo Rojas, who started second. Zonta went on the lead for his entire first stint of 25 laps, the most consecutive for any driver of the race. Zonta turned the No. 76 Pontiac Lola over to teammate Nic Jönsson, who received fuel but no new tires on the pit stop. Within two laps, Jönsson called on the radio to report smoke from the left front. Shortly thereafter he suffered a blown left front tire. Damage inside the wheel well cost the team three laps in the pits. They could never recover that amount of time and had to settle for a 13th-place finish.

For the second year in a row, Krohn Racing is sponsoring a group of kids from the Hurlburt Field Youth Program to the Porsche 250 race at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. The youth group is based out of Hurlburt Field Air Force Base near Pensacola, Florida. Team owner Tracy Krohn and his Krohn Racing team will treat the kids and their counselors to a VIP race weekend. "We are happy to sponsor the Hurlburt Field Youth Group for a race weekend," said Tracy Krohn, a father of two daughters. "These are kids from military families of active duty, DOD civilian or base contractors that are encouraged to focus on their own personal achievements such as leadership, scholastics, awareness and skills. Most of these kids have experienced first-hand the impact of a military deployment on their own family. They come up to Barber to camp out for the weekend and do some teambuilding exercises and learn problem solving and peacekeeping. We host them to a VIP package to provide their meals, give the kids some racing clothes and gifts, introduce them to the drivers and immerse them into the world of racing. It is a chance for them to get away from the stresses of military life for a fun weekend.

Krohn Racing just completed their second podium finish of the season as they head to Birmingham, Alabama this week for Round 9 of 14 in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series. The podium finish was a real morale boost to the Krohn team, who is developing a new Proto-Auto Lola this season. The Barber Motorsports Park circuit is a race track at which Krohn Racing has experienced success the past couple of year. In 2006, Krohn Racing won the event with drivers Colin Braun and Jörg Bergmeister. After a head-to-head battle to the checkered last year, the team finished second with Braun and Nic Jönsson.

The Krohn Racing team showed that their hard work and persistence with the development of the new Proto-Auto Lola is paying off, as the team celebrated a podium finish in the Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International Speedway. Round eighth of the 2008 Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series was the second podium finish for the Krohn team, both third-place finishes. Nic Jönsson and Ricardo Zonta drove their No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola from the 13th starting position to third place. Team owner/driver Tracy Krohn and Eric van de Poele started 17th and finished 14th after a 60-second penalty for running over their sister car's air hose cost them time which they could never recover during the 70-lap, two-hour and 25 minute race.

The Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series heads into the second half of the season this week, as the teams return to Daytona International Speedway for Round 8 of 14 races. The return to the site of the inaugural race of the season, the Rolex 24 At Daytona, makes a drastic change as the Grand-Am teams hold a one-day event on Thursday, July 3rd, just prior to the popular NASCAR 400-mile race weekend. Krohn Racing will debut their Proto-Auto Lolas at the 3.56-mile, 12-turn super speedway road course. Team owner/driver Tracy W. Krohn and teammate Eric van de Poele will drive the No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola, while Nic Jönsson and Ricardo Zonta will compete in the No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola this weekend.

The EMCO Gears Classic at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, round seven of 14 in Grand-Am Rolex Spots Car Series competition, was won by defending Grand-Am DP champions Alex Gurney and Jon Fogarty in the No. 99 Gainsco/Bob Stallings Pontiac Riley. Eight cautions for 37 laps were caused primarily by rain, which fell for the majority of the race. Nic Jönsson, starting driver of the No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola, led the Mid-Ohio race for three laps (lap 34-36), all under rainy conditions. It was the first time the new Proto-Auto Lolas have seen rain this season, so all the Krohn drivers had to learn how the car handled under wet conditions and with rain tires. In addition to leading the race, Jönsson also had the team's best qualifying position of the season, a fifth place start. He and teammate Ricardo Zonta finished ninth overall. The No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola of owner/driver Tracy Krohn and Eric van de Poele qualified 13th and got as high as third place early in the race before and penalty and brief off-road excursion relegated them to a 14th (DP class) finish. Everyone was challenged by the rain and the two and three-quarters hour Grand-Am race finished under yellow flag conditions following a multi-car wreck on the front straight. Tracy W. Krohn, team owner/driver, No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola: "I got in for my stint with brand new wet tires. It was very slippery. What I thought was a bad call turned out to be a mistake on our part. We pitted under the wrong set of conditions. We thought we had pitted after the window but we didn't get that timing right and it cost us a drive-thru penalty plus 20 seconds. Eric did a great job the first part of the race. We tried a little different strategy with the car at first and we put some rain tires on just prior to the start of the race. We were hoping it was going to rain a little quicker than it did. It didn't rain quite quick enough. It took about four laps instead of two or three. As it was, the strategy worked out okay and we actually moved up a couple of position, but we had thought we would end up being first. Eric got hung up by some GT cars. He ran a really solid, solid race. He had one little mishap but no big deal. He came back and turned car over to me. I went out with that set up and pushed hard and ran the thing off the track. At that point in time I was just hanging on. It was very treacherous. I took the drive-through penalty. It was unfortunate for me because I was right up there with the pack and just trying to learn the track rain line. I started to push immediately and just made a mistake and went off track. The bottom line is we learned a lot about the car. This is the first time we've run in the rain. We learned some of the strengths and weaknesses of the car and some things we need to work on. All in all, it was not a horrible day, but not the day we expected. Nic and Ricardo ran up front for a good while. They also had a little strategy issue but it wasn't because of what they were doing. They did a great job and car was good and it just continues to get better. It really does continue to get better but the performance doesn't show it yet. With the rain, Mid-Ohio is a different kind of track, very treacherous. It's really very technical anyway. You add a little rain and it just gets exciting. The fans got a show today!" Eric van de Poele, driver, No. 75 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola: "It was interesting in the rain for the first time. We did not have the best set-up and it was really tough, quite difficult. However, I really like the rain conditions. I got the car up to third. Even if I spun a few times, like everybody, I had a lot of fun. But, unfortunately we did not have the finish position we wanted. It's a bit disappointing, but in another way, we are there. We were third at one point, so it means we can compete. We still a need a better car for any conditions, but we closed the gap. We definitely closed the gap."
Nic Jönsson, driver, No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola: "Qualifying was the best qualifying so far this year, so we're very pleased with that. We had a threat of rain all day but it didn't start to rain until several laps into the race. But beforehand, we had to sort out what we were going to do with tires and all that. We knew the rain was coming, so basically we decided to go with high down force for the race. We started the race with a huge push in the car. It started raining pretty bad and this is the first time we had to drive it in the rain, so we didn't know what to expect. It was extremely difficult to drive in the rain. You had to be very careful with throttle application. I found out the hard way when I spun in Turn 1 a few laps in. Fortunately I was able to get those lost positions back. We were pretty much running second most of the stint. Unfortunately, we decided to pit too late. We went from second down to 16th. Ricardo got in and, obviously, also had never driven the car in rain before. Once he got dialed in and got going, he started gaining on people. Then the track started to dry out. We then picked up a huge push and, unfortunately, could not keep the pace. The race ended three laps early when there was a big wreck on the front straightaway. I think if that had not happened we could have gotten a few more positions, maybe in the Top 7. We are still having a little struggle to get the car the way we want. We just have to keep our head down and keep plugging away and sooner or later things will turn around for us. We have all the ingredients - a good crew, good engineering experience, a very good package overall. We just need to put all those cards in the right place to make it work as one unit. We are all experienced enough and been there before so we have to keep working hard. We will keep working on trying to get it right and we will. We will." Ricardo Zonta, driver, No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola: "I think the only race we could talk is about Nic's race because it was very good. He did a very good job. We lost the race in the pits. As soon as we pitted late, we lost the race. There's not much to say. I had to learn the car in the rain like everyone. This point doesn't matter because we were the same speed in the rain. After we got behind we could not do anything. We lost the race there." The next Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series race, Round 8 of 14 will be the Brumos Porsche 250 at Daytona International Speedway on Thursday night, July 3rd. The Houston-based Risi Competizione team proved today that they were more than equal to the challenge of the greatest sports car test in the world for man and machine by winning the GT2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France. The American Le Mans Series GT2 Champions finished at the head of the GT2 field in the 76th running of the French endurance classic, 19th overall, and led a Ferrari clean sweep of the podium, finishing 7 laps ahead of the second placed car. In fact, Ferraris were placed 1-2-3-4 in the class.

In the last four hours of running before the start of the 24 Hours of Le Mans on Saturday, Risi Competizione ran through to completion its planned program of set up changes, driver familiarisation and mandatory night laps. The first part of the evening was punctuated by further interruptions and breaks in track time due to a number of crashes and incidents which befell entrants in the prototype classes, but all six drivers had time behind the wheel and a last chance to get themselves fully comfortable in the surroundings of their Ferrari 430 GT car before the start of the race.

The drivers, teams and hundreds of thousands of spectators are gathering at Le Mans this week for the 76th running of the world's greatest sportscar race. This year the flag will drop at 3:00 pm local time (8:00 am CT) on Saturday June 14 and 24 hours of high speed competitive racing will begin. It's guaranteed that every emotion known to man will be experienced, somewhere, up and down the pitlane, and there will be thrills and spills, controversy, excitement, joy and despair as the 55 entries take to the 13.629 km (8.47 mile) circuit. Much of the track still utilises public roads creating a unique mixture of road surfaces, fast and slow corners and track conditions. The length of the circuit means that the weather can change dramatically and inconsistently, it can be dry on one part of the circuit and very wet at another. Add in the elements of racing through the night and the fastest cars reaching top speeds greater than 215 mph and it becomes clear what a challenge for both man and machine this event creates.

The Sahlen's Six Hours of the Glen race at historic Watkins Glen International, round six of 14 in Grand-Am Rolex Spots Car Series competition, brought another victory for the No. 01 Ganassi Lexus Riley of Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas. Krohn Racing had a good run, with two drivers leading the race. Ricardo Zonta lead for six laps (lap 150-155) before having to make a final stop for fuel on lap 165 of 179 laps. Jönsson led a single lap, lap 108, before being called in for a pit stop. Qualifying driver Zonta and co-driver Nic Jönsson, in the No. 76 Krohn Racing Pontiac Lola, finished 10th overall in the 45 car field. The sister car of team owner/driver Tracy W. Krohn and qualifying driver Eric van de Poele finished 14th after starting seventh on the grid on the 3.4-mile, 11-turn Watkins Glen, New York road course. Krohn, Jönsson and van de Poele left the track immediately after the race to hop a private plane to fly to Le Mans, France for next week's 24 Hours of Le Mans race. The trio will drive the No. 83 Risi-Krohn Ferrari 430GT in the GT2 class in an attempt to defend or better their second place class finish last year.
